Raising the Bar of Discipleship

If you are passionate about discipleship but have struggled to make deeply rooted disciples of Jesus Christ, then The Gospel Tool is for you! The traditional model of relying on church leaders to disciple new or maturing believers tends to create a bottleneck in the process of discipleship. The Gospel Tool aims to change the model by being a resource that empowers all believers to participate in discipleship multiplication. The Gospel Tool:

  • Grows a Culture of Discipleship

A culture of discipleship is an environment where it is normal, and even expected, that followers of Jesus Christ develop a single-minded passion to learn from Him and to become like Him in all things (1 John 2:6). As this happens, those who are being discipled will increasingly impact the community as Christ intends.

  • Makes Disciples Who Multiply Disciples

Both new believers and people who have attended church for years will be encouraged to grow as disciples who make disciples. The Gospel Tool aims to grow the believer’s desire to participate in the process of making disciples.

  • Equips People to Disciple Others

The Gospel Tool equips participants for the work of discipleship. It is a tool for discipleship that is well laid out, easy to use, and teaches the entirety of the Gospel from the beginning of creation through to the completion of all things at the end.

  • Increases Reliance on The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit grows the Church, and His presence is essential in the process of making disciples. As a group and as individuals, participants will spend time actively learning to listen for and discern the guidance of the Holy Spirit through prayer, scripture and song. This will deepen trust in the Holy Spirit to direct all aspects of their lives.

What The Gospel Tool Bible Study Does

While there are many ingredients involved in successful disciple making and growing as a disciple, the following five are absolute essentials that The Gospel Tool incorporates:

Jesus is Lord. A life of obedience to Jesus and His Words is a life that is fruitful and thriving.

The Holy Spirit draws us to new life in Christ. He transforms our characters and shapes Christ’s life within us. He draws us into unity and community in the body of Jesus. He gifts and empowers us for effective witness and service. Learning to be sensitive to and welcome the Holy Spirit’s work is foundational for experiencing all of this.

Disciples of Jesus eat, drink, study, memorize, and meditate on and grow deep roots in the Bible because it is God’s inspired Word. An amazing gift, it is the only infallible guide for our faith and life.

Jesus restores us to relationship with God. Prayer is the place we grow in vital communion with Him. Just as children grow in their ability to speak, so we grow in our relationship with God by learning to speak with Him. This includes learning to pray with and for others

Followers of Jesus are part of a body. Jesus brings us into unity as a community who together shares and embodies the good news of the Kingdom of God. It takes intentionality to nurture the kind of relationships that reflect the love and gospel of Jesus to all.

The Gospel Tool Bible Study teaches these essentials in the following ways:

  • Grows Biblical Literacy

The Gospel Tool focuses on the core aspects of the Christian faith, which Bible-based believers of all times and places will find in common, regardless of theological background.

  • Emphasizes Themes of King, Kingdom, Relationship, and Role

Each of these roles is an essential part of the gospel story and a believer’s identity.  The Gospel Tool emphasizes all of them throughout the study.

  • Moves from Head to Heart

Each lesson incorporates one of the spiritual disciplines.  Lesson structure is carefully designed to more easily enable learning, retention, and integration in the life of a believer.

  • Teaches Effective Gospel Communication

Believers need to be able to share their faith simply and clearly.  The Gospel Tool trains them in a way that makes it easy to communicate the gospel to others. The Visual Gospel is referenced throughout the study as a simple and effective way to share the Gospel with others.

What is The Gospel Tool?

The Gospel Tool is a gospel overview, which reads like a story, summarizing and describing the biblical narrative of God and his Kingdom in 40 short units. This document has been reviewed by many pastors and theologians to ensure that it briefly and accurately depicts the overarching story of the Bible. It highlights both of these themes:

  • Relationship: The good news of Jesus’ Kingdom and the restoration of relationship with God the Father.
  • Role: The restored role that God’s people have within His Kingdom, both now and into eternity.

Please read The Gospel Tool to understand the big picture of God’s story as you prepare to begin this season of Bible study.

Track Your Growth

The Self-Assessment Tool was developed as a way to intentionally evaluate one’s own growth as a disciple of Jesus Christ, at several points along this discipleship journey. While we often have goals in other areas of our lives, we sometimes neglect that type of intentionality when it comes to our spiritual growth.

Insights from the field of education, as well as a study of discipleship maturity, have shaped this assessment tool. It is designed to help grow self-awareness, and also to help identify marks of maturity and goals for personal growth, which can be discussed and shared with one another for the purpose of prayer and mutual encouragement. It is not a complete list of the marks of spiritual maturity, but those who have used it thus far have found it very helpful to track their progress.

See What’s Inside: Discussion Guides

Each Discussion Guide reviews two of the weekly lessons. They are designed with learning retention activities, prayer for the lost, and “building bridges” time for practicing starting spiritual conversations and sharing the gospel.
